India’s Fuel Supply Stuck in Persian Gulf! 18 Indian Ships Anchored Amid Middle East Crisis

The intensifying conflict in the Middle East has cast a long shadow over India’s energy security, with 28 vessels carrying critical fuel supplies currently stranded in the Persian Gulf. Among these are 18 Indian-flagged ships and 10 foreign vessels laden with crude oil, LPG, and LNG. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas trade, has become a high-risk zone following the escalation of military actions between Iran and US-Israel forces.

Rajesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, highlighted that nearly 500 ships are facing transit issues, including those bound for India with 485 sailors on board. The war has caused a dramatic surge in commercial insurance premiums, jumping from 0.04% to over 0.7% of the insured value. While Iran has recently allowed “non-hostile vessels” to pass—permitting 8 India-bound ships to cross—the situation remains volatile. The Indian government is closely monitoring the development to ensure a steady flow of essential fuels and the safety of its maritime personnel.
