India’s First ‘Musical Road’ Debuts in Mumbai: Drive to the Beats of Oscar-Winning Song ‘Jai Ho’!

Driving in Mumbai just got a rhythmic upgrade! Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis today inaugurated India’s first-ever ‘Musical Road’ on the Mumbai Coastal Road Corridor. Inspired by similar engineering marvels in Japan and Hungary, this road offers a unique driving experience where the road itself plays music as vehicles pass over it.

The Science Behind the Sound: Located on the northern carriageway from Nariman Point towards Worli, this 500-meter stretch features precisely engineered ‘rumble strips’. When a vehicle travels at a steady speed of 70-80 km/ph, the vibration between the tires and the grooves creates sound waves that harmonize into the iconic tune of ‘Jai Ho’ from Slumdog Millionaire. This project, executed by the BMC and conceptualized by former MP Rahul Shewale, begins right after exiting the Coastal Road’s underground tunnel.

Speed Discipline through Melody: Apart from the thrill, the primary goal of this musical road is to encourage drivers to maintain a disciplined speed. The melody is only clearly audible when the car stays within the 70-80 km/ph range. To alert commuters, signage has been placed 500m and 100m ahead of the musical section. This innovative move is part of the larger Coastal Road project aimed at enhancing connectivity and making urban travel more engaging.
