A startling health crisis has emerged in Burdwan city, with at least 30 youths from affluent and highly educated backgrounds testing positive for HIV. The Zilla Parishad’s Public Health Department revealed on Monday that risky sexual behavior and unsafe homosexual relations are the primary drivers behind this sudden spike in the deadly virus.

Shocking Statistics: Bishwanath Roy, the head of the Public Health Department, stated, “There are currently about 90 HIV-positive cases in the district, out of which 30 are from Burdwan city alone. All of them are young men belonging to elite families.” The surge came to light after a youth, suffering from prolonged illness, underwent a series of medical tests that confirmed he was HIV positive. Subsequently, testing among his close social circle revealed a chain of infections.

A Hidden Syndicate? Authorities suspect that this is not an isolated incident but might be linked to an underground sexual network operating within the city. While health awareness campaigns are traditionally focused on red-light areas, the spread of the virus among the urban elite has caught officials off guard.

Response from Authorities: The health department is maintaining strict confidentiality regarding the identities of the infected youths while providing necessary treatment. “HIV is preventable and manageable with safe sexual practices and regular testing,” health officials emphasized.
