In a significant welfare measure aimed at honouring the nation’s uniformed heroes, the Government of India on Thursday (March 26, 2026) announced lifetime complimentary rail travel for gallantry award winners from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. This initiative expands the scope of existing railway concessions to include recipients of the Sena Medal, Nau Sena Medal, and Vayu Sena Medal for gallantry.

Key Benefits of the Scheme:

• Eligible Classes: Awardees can travel free of cost in First Class, Second AC (2 AC), and AC Chair Car on all trains operated by Indian Railways.
• Companion Facility: Each medal recipient is entitled to travel with one companion at no extra cost for life.
• Family Inclusion: The benefit extends to the spouses of deceased awardees (until remarriage). In cases of posthumous awards to unmarried personnel, the parents will be eligible for this lifelong travel facility.

The Ministry of Defence stated that this move is a mark of respect for the bravery and supreme sacrifices made by the personnel in the line of duty. Previously, such high-level concessions were primarily reserved for Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra awardees. By including these prestigious gallantry medals, thousands of military families across the country will now enjoy dignified and comfortable travel options as a tribute to their service to the motherland.
