High Drama in Bengal Assembly! Governor Wraps Speech in 4 Minutes; Suvendu’s ‘Well Done’ Sparks Row

The Budget Session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly kicked off on a stormy note as Governor CV Ananda Bose delivered an unusually brief address amidst a war of slogans. While BJP MLAs, led by Suvendu Adhikari, chanted “Bharat Mata Ki Jai,” TMC members countered with “Joy Bangla.” In the heat of the commotion, the Governor concluded his speech—for which 45 minutes were allotted—in just four and a half minutes before exiting the floor.

During his short address, the Governor lauded the state government’s performance, stating that law and order are well-maintained and hailing Kolkata as the safest city in the country. He emphasized that despite the non-cooperation from the Center regarding funds, the state has continued its developmental journey under the Chief Minister’s leadership. “West Bengal ranks number one in MSME, Skill Development, and social welfare schemes like Anandadhara,” the Governor noted.

The speech met with instant resistance from the opposition. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari interrupted, calling it a “political speech.” As the Governor prepared to leave, Adhikari remarked, “Well done, Sir,” accompanied by applause from BJP benches—a gesture that has triggered intense debate over whether it was a sarcastic jibe or genuine approval. The Governor’s speech also highlighted projects like the Ghatal Master Plan, Lakshmir Bhandar, and the ‘Karmashree’ initiative (started after the Center stopped MGNREGA funds). He also expressed concern over the mistreatment of Bengali migrant workers in other states.
