Get ₹25,000 for Daughter’s Wedding! Mamata Govt Boosts ‘Rupashree’ Scheme Ahead of Polls

With elections around the corner, the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government is doubling down on its social welfare push. Following the success of the ‘Yuvashree’ and ‘Yuvashathi’ schemes, the ‘Rupashree’ project has emerged as a major relief for economically weaker sections. Under this initiative, the state government provides a one-time financial grant of ₹25,000 for the marriage of adult daughters from low-income families.
Launched on April 1, 2018, the Rupashree scheme aims to prevent poor families from falling into debt traps caused by high-interest wedding loans. To qualify, the bride must be at least 18 years old and the groom 21. Applicants need to submit proof of family income, age certificates for both parties, photographs, wedding invitation/proof, and bank details. As the state gears up for the polls, such direct benefit transfer (DBT) schemes are being seen as a strategic move to secure the support of the rural and semi-urban populace.
