Freedom of Navigation vs Regional Security: PM Modi Condemns Attacks on Critical Infra in Talk with Pezeshkian

In a major diplomatic outreach amid the spiraling conflict in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. While the call began with exchange of Eid and Nowruz greetings, it quickly transitioned into a serious discussion on the evolving security situation that threatens regional stability and global trade routes, especially the Strait of Hormuz.

PM Modi strongly condemned attacks on critical infrastructure and stressed the absolute importance of safeguarding the “Freedom of Navigation.” India’s primary concern remains the safety of international shipping lanes, which are vital for energy imports. On the other hand, President Pezeshkian emphasized that the “immediate cessation of aggression” by the US and Israel is the only way to end the war. He specifically called upon India, in its capacity as the current BRICS chair, to play an “independent and proactive role” in de-escalating tensions.

Tehran has also proposed a regional security framework comprising West Asian nations to ensure stability without foreign interference. Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s consistent stand that dialogue and diplomacy are the only paths to resolving disputes. The safety of thousands of Indian nationals residing in Iran was also discussed, with PM Modi appreciating Tehran’s continued support. This high-level interaction underscores India’s pivotal role as a balancing power in a region on the brink of a wider war.
