End of Cheap Protein? Middle-Class Woes Deepen as Egg Prices Hit New Highs

With the end of spring, temperatures aren’t the only thing rising in Kolkata—egg prices are following suit. After a brief period of relief triggered by the Middle East conflict, the essential protein source is once again burning a hole in the common man’s pocket. In just seven days, wholesale prices have surged by ₹12 per tray (30 eggs).
According to the National Egg Co-ordination Committee (NECC), the wholesale price in Kolkata has reached ₹5.10 per egg, making a full tray cost ₹153—up from ₹141 last week. This hike has hit retail markets hard, where a single egg is now retailing at ₹6, and a tray costs anywhere between ₹165 and ₹170. Experts suggest that as international export hurdles clear and supplies to Gulf countries resume, the local surplus has diminished, leading to this sharp price correction. Retailers warn that prices might climb even further in the coming days.
