End of Cheap Flights? Govt Lifts Control on Air Tickets; Airlines Now Free to Charge as per Demand!

Travelers planning their next domestic trip might need to rethink their budget as the Central Government has officially lifted the regulatory caps on domestic airfares starting this Monday. By withdrawing the temporary price ceiling, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has paved the way for airlines to determine ticket prices independently, factoring in market demand and rising operational costs.

The price cap was initially introduced in December 2025 as an emergency measure after significant flight disruptions—particularly involving IndiGo—led to a sudden surge in ticket prices. Until now, airlines were bound by an upper limit of approximately ₹18,000 for one-way economy tickets, depending on the distance. With this restriction gone, airlines are no longer restricted by any maximum fare threshold.

The Ministry stated that this decision comes in light of the soaring prices of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) and geopolitical tensions affecting global aviation logistics. Airline operators had long been lobbying for the removal of these caps, citing heavy revenue losses due to high fuel costs and restricted pricing power.

However, the Ministry has issued a subtle warning: “In times of extreme demand or emergencies, any excessive or unreasonable hike in fares will be viewed seriously.” While the government aims to restore market dynamics, the common man is bracing for a steep hike, especially during peak travel seasons. For those booking last-minute tickets, the sky might literally be the limit for airfares now.
