Election Commission Settles 32 Lakh Voter Grievances! How Many Fall Under ‘Deleted Category’?

In a significant move towards ensuring a transparent electoral process, the Election Commission (EC) has provided a detailed update on the resolution of pending voter applications and the SIR (Special Investigation Report) mechanism. Out of a staggering 60 lakh pending cases, the EC has successfully disposed of 32 lakh applications, marking a major milestone in the pre-election cleanup drive.
The ‘Deleted Category’ Statistics: According to the commission’s latest data, approximately 30.2% of the resolved cases resulted in the deletion of names from the electoral roll. This means nearly 9.66 lakh entries were permanently removed after thorough verification. These deletions primarily targeted duplicate entries, deceased voters, and those who have permanently shifted their residence. The use of advanced de-duplication software alongside field verification has helped in identifying these discrepancies.
Clarification on SIR and Remaining Cases: The EC has addressed concerns regarding the SIR, emphasizing that the focus is on maintaining the integrity of the ‘One Person, One Vote’ principle. While 32 lakh cases are closed, work on the remaining 28 lakh applications is being expedited. Booth Level Officers (BLOs) have been instructed to ensure 100% accuracy during physical verification. The Commission reiterated that this massive overhaul is essential for a fair election, urging citizens to verify their status on the official portal to avoid any last-minute discrepancies.
