Election Commission Cracks the Whip! Hanskhali BDO Sayantan Bhattacharya Suspended for Assaulting Teacher

In a major disciplinary move ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, the Election Commission has suspended Sayantan Bhattacharya, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Hanskhali. The decision comes following a shocking incident where the officer allegedly assaulted and injured a teacher during an official election training session.

The incident occurred on March 27 at the Ranaghat Debnath Institute for Boys, where polling personnel were being trained for the upcoming elections. According to reports, an argument broke out between BDO Sayantan Bhattacharya and a teacher named Saikat Chatterjee. The BDO allegedly lost his temper and physically assaulted the teacher, causing him injuries that required medical attention. The incident sparked widespread outrage among the teaching community, leading to formal complaints lodged with the commission.

Taking immediate cognizance of the matter, the Election Commission finalized the suspension order on Tuesday. The Commission stated that maintaining the dignity and safety of election personnel is paramount. This move is seen as a strong deterrent against any misuse of power by administrative officials during the poll period. As the state prepares for intense campaigning starting April 1, the suspension of the Hanskhali BDO serves as a reminder that the EC will not tolerate any high-handedness or misconduct within the electoral machinery.
