TMC heavyweight and MLA Debasish Kumar appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday, marking his second visit to the agency’s office within a week. The investigation stems from a raid conducted last Saturday at a South Kolkata-based construction firm, where the ED allegedly found evidence of illegal land grabbing and unauthorized construction projects facilitated by local administrative support.

According to ED sources, several projects within Kumar’s constituency are under scrutiny for potential violations of municipal norms. The agency is probing whether there was a direct or indirect quid-pro-quo between the construction firm and the local administration. Although Kumar provided a statement during his first summons on Monday, investigators called him back on Friday to clarify discrepancies found in seized documents and transaction records.

With elections around the corner, these frequent summons have put the TMC on the back foot in the high-stakes South Kolkata belt. Political experts suggest that the outcome of this probe into the builder-politician nexus could significantly impact the electoral mood in the region. The ED is currently cross-referencing digital evidence with the MLA’s testimonies.
