EC’s Massive Pre-Poll Purge: Over 170 OCs and ICs Transferred Across West Bengal in One Go!

In its most significant move since the announcement of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a massive reshuffle of the ground-level police administration. Striking a decisive blow to potential local bias, the poll panel has transferred 173 Officers-in-Charge (OC) and Inspectors-in-Charge (IC) across the state. This includes 31 key officers under the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Police.
The reshuffle has notably impacted high-profile and sensitive constituencies. The IC of Bhabanipur police station—the heart of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s constituency—has been replaced by Soumitra Basu from the STF. Key battlegrounds like Nandigram, Haldia, and Kolaghat have also seen a complete change in their local police leadership. Districts such as Murshidabad, Malda, and both the 24 Parganas have been heavily reorganized to ensure a fear-free polling environment.
The Commission’s objective is clear: to minimize local political influence and maintain absolute transparency. By bringing in new officers from different zones, the ECI aims to eliminate any allegations of partisan behavior by the local police. The order strictly mandates that the transferred officers are barred from any election-related duties until the counting concludes on May 4. This unprecedented administrative cleanup signals that the 2026 battle for Bengal will be fought under the strictest vigilance seen in recent history.
