ECI Gives Nod! Transferred Police Officers Can Now Be Used for Election Campaign Security

In a strategic move to bolster security during the high-stakes 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has granted special permission to the state police. According to reports by Amit Sarkar, police officers who were recently transferred under the Commission’s mandate can now be deployed for the security arrangements of political leaders during election campaigns.
Solving the Security Personnel Crunch Following the announcement of the election dates, a massive reshuffle took place within the West Bengal Police. Usually, transferred officers are kept away from election-related activities to ensure neutrality. However, with the surge in VVIP movements and public rallies, the state administration faced a shortage of trained security personnel. The ECI’s nod comes as a significant relief to the state’s law enforcement agencies.
Strict Guidelines Issued The ECI has laid down clear conditions for this deployment. These officers are strictly permitted to perform security-related tasks (VIP protection) and are barred from any direct election management duties, such as booth monitoring or law and order interventions related to polling. Published by Sanjukta Sarkar, the report emphasizes that the ECI will maintain a close watch to ensure that these officers do not influence the electoral process in any manner.
