EC Crackdown in Bengal: 83 BDOs and AROs Transferred Ahead of High-Stakes Assembly Polls

In a major administrative overhaul, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Sunday ordered the immediate transfer of 83 Block Development Officers (BDOs) and Assistant Returning Officers (AROs) across West Bengal. This move comes as part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to maintain the highest level of transparency and neutrality before the upcoming assembly elections scheduled for April 23 and 29.
The transfer list includes high-profile regions like Nandigram and other sensitive blocks across various districts. According to the directive issued on March 29, 2026, these officers have been reassigned to ensure that the polling process remains free from local administrative influence. This follows a series of high-level changes where the Chief Secretary, DGP, and several District Magistrates were recently replaced by the poll panel.
BDOs play a pivotal role in the election machinery at the grassroots level, acting as the primary point of contact for logistical arrangements and polling personnel. Analysts believe that by rotating these officers, the ECI aims to eliminate any perceived bias and boost voter confidence. While the opposition has hailed the ECI’s firm stance, the administrative machinery is now working overtime to facilitate these new postings before the formal training sessions begin next week.
