Political violence has once again rocked Malda’s Chanchal as Mortuj Alam, a local Congress leader and husband of Panchayat Samiti member Nasheda Khatun, was brutally attacked on Monday night. According to reports, Alam was dragged out of his residence in Shahbazpur village and assaulted with iron rods by alleged TMC workers. He is currently in critical condition at Chanchal Super Specialty Hospital with severe injuries to his head and eyes.

The victim’s wife, Nasheda Khatun, alleged that local TMC activists Rajesh and Meraj had been threatening them for days. She claimed the attackers stormed their house at midnight, shouting death threats. While Congress candidate Asif Mehbub termed it a “pre-planned attack by TMC goons,” the ruling party has denied any involvement. Malda District TMC General Secretary Rafiqul Hossain claimed the incident was a fallout of internal infighting within the Congress party. With elections around the corner, this violent episode has escalated tensions in the region.
