Digital Revolution in India’s 16th Census! Nationwide Survey Begins from April 1, 2026

After a long hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s 16th Census officially commenced on April 1, 2026. According to the Registrar General and the Ministry of Home Affairs, this massive exercise is set to be the first-ever “Digital Census” in the country’s history, integrating the core principles of Digital India for faster and more accurate data processing.
Breaking away from the traditional pen-and-paper method, over 3 million enumerators will now use a specialized mobile app to record data. A major highlight of this census is the introduction of “Self-Enumeration.” Citizens can now log in to a dedicated government portal using their mobile numbers and fill in their details personally, ensuring greater convenience and privacy.
The 2027 Census report will also place a significant focus on caste and tribe-related data. To ensure 100% coverage, the government is deploying “Houselisting Block Creator” (HLBC) software, which utilizes satellite imagery and geo-fencing technology to identify every household. This technological leap marks a new era in India’s administrative efficiency, making census data processing nearly instantaneous.
