Congress’s Big Play in Bengal; Free Education up to PG Level and ₹2,000 Monthly Stipend for Students

Raising the stakes for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, the Indian National Congress officially released its election manifesto in Kolkata on Wednesday. Following the announcement of candidates for all 294 seats, the party’s National President, Mallikarjun Kharge, unveiled the document, outlining a vision for a “New Bengal.”
Addressing the gathering, Kharge emphasized that Congress aims to emerge as a formidable “third alternative” to break the long-standing duopoly of the TMC and the BJP. The manifesto places a heavy emphasis on education and administrative transparency. In a major populist move, the party has promised free education up to the Post-Graduate level and a monthly allowance of ₹2,000 for students to ease the financial burden on middle and lower-income families.
Targeting the current administration over alleged recruitment scams, Congress has pledged a corruption-free government and robust job creation. By focusing on social welfare and systemic reforms, the party hopes to tap into the sentiments of voters disillusioned by the fierce TMC-BJP rivalry. Whether these ambitious promises can translate into seats for the “Hand” symbol remains to be seen on counting day.
