Chaos and violence erupted at Vidhan Bhavan, the West Bengal Pradesh Congress headquarters, following the announcement of Rohan Mitra—son of the late veteran leader Somen Mitra—as the candidate for the Ballygunge assembly seat. What began as a verbal protest by a section of disgruntled party workers quickly escalated into a bloody confrontation.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of absolute mayhem as rival factions clashed within the party office. Punching, shoving, and the use of blunt objects left several workers injured, with blood stains visible on the floors of the historic building. The protesters alleged that the party leadership is prioritizing “dynasty politics” over deserving, grassroots-level workers who have served the organization for years.

This internal meltdown comes at a critical time as the party prepares for the upcoming by-polls. Instead of presenting a united front against formidable opponents like the TMC and BJP, the Congress now finds itself crippled by infighting. Analysts believe that this display of indiscipline and physical violence will not only damage the party’s public image but also alienate voters in the Ballygunge constituency, making an already tough battle nearly impossible to win.
