Big Shift in LPG Cylinders? Center Breaks Silence on Replacing 14.2kg with 10kg Tanks!

A wave of confusion has gripped LPG consumers across the country following a viral social media post claiming that the central government is planning to replace the standard 14.2kg gas cylinders with smaller 10kg variants. Amid talks of a potential fuel crisis, this news has sparked intense debate among households regarding price adjustments and supply logistics.
Addressing the viral claims, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas have clarified that there is no mandatory plan to scrap the 14.2kg cylinders. The reports suggesting a complete phase-out are misleading. However, the government confirmed that 10kg ‘Composite Cylinders’ have indeed been introduced to provide more choices to consumers, focusing on safety and ease of use.
These 10kg composite cylinders are a modern alternative to the traditional heavy steel tanks. Made from blow-molded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and reinforced with glass fiber, they are significantly lighter and rust-free. One of the standout features of this cylinder is its translucent body, allowing consumers to check the gas level visually—a move designed to tackle complaints of under-filled cylinders.
The government emphasized that the introduction of these lightweight cylinders is aimed at urban lifestyles and small families, but the traditional 14.2kg cylinder remains the mainstay for the majority of the population. There is no shortage of fuel as claimed in various viral posts. Customers are advised to stay vigilant against misinformation and verify any cylinder-related updates through official oil marketing company (OMC) apps or websites. For now, your regular gas supply remains unchanged, and the 10kg option is purely voluntary.
