Big Move to Curb Post-Poll Violence! Election Commission to Retain 500 CAPF Companies in Bengal After Results

In a significant departure from standard protocols, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that 500 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will remain stationed in West Bengal even after the declaration of the 2026 Assembly election results. This move is specifically aimed at preventing post-poll violence, a recurring issue that has marred the state’s democratic process in previous years.
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar emphasized that the “long-term stay” of central forces is a confidence-building measure for the citizens. These troops will continue to patrol sensitive zones to thwart any attempts of political retribution or intimidation. Additionally, the ECI has already initiated strict disciplinary actions against several police officers for failing to maintain neutrality. By extending the deployment “until further orders,” the Commission has signaled its commitment to a peaceful transition of power, ensuring that the post-election period remains free from the chaos and displacement that followed the 2021 polls.
