Beyond Textbooks: NCERT Granted ‘Deemed University’ Status; To Offer Its Own Degrees!

In a landmark move for India’s education sector, the Union Ministry of Education has officially granted ‘Deemed-to-be-University’ status to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Following a formal notification on March 30, this premier body—previously known for curriculum and research—is now empowered to award its own undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD degrees. This new status extends to its six Regional Institutes of Education (RIEs) across the country as well.

The decision comes after a green signal from the University Grants Commission (UGC). However, the new status carries specific mandates: NCERT cannot operate for commercial profit and must adhere strictly to UGC’s academic standards. In line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020), there will be a heavy focus on research and innovation. Additionally, mandatory participation in NIRF rankings and the implementation of the ‘Academic Bank of Credit’ (ABC) have been ordered. This transformation is expected to redefine the landscape of school education and teacher training in India.
