Bengal Tense Ahead of Polls! EC Orders NIA Probe into Malda Violence, Bans Illegal Gatherings

As the bugle for the elections sounds in West Bengal, the state has already plunged into a wave of political unrest. Concerned by the escalating violence, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has shifted into high gear, issuing strict directives to maintain law and order. The recent unprecedented protest at the Chief Electoral Officer’s (CEO) office in Kolkata has been marked as a serious security lapse by the commission.

In a rare move during an election cycle, the ECI has handed over the investigation of the Kaliachak incident in Malda to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). This decision underscores the gravity of the attacks on officials and the overall volatile atmosphere in the state.

Starting this Friday, a complete ban on illegal gatherings has been imposed across West Bengal. No political party or organization will be allowed to hold rallies, meetings, or marches without prior official clearance. Commission sources indicate that central forces have been instructed to act decisively against any attempt to disrupt the electoral process. With these measures, the ECI aims to send a clear message: violence will not be tolerated, and the rule of law must prevail.
