Bengal Polls 2026: Poll Worker Targeted in Ranaghat; House Vandalized and Families Threatened!

As the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections approach, a chilling incident of violence against a polling official has surfaced in Ranaghat, Nadia district. A polling officer has alleged that he was not only assaulted at an official training center but was also followed to his home and threatened with dire consequences. This incident has raised serious concerns regarding the safety of government employees assigned to election duty.
The Horrific Experience: According to the victim, the harassment began during a mandatory election training session on Sunday. A group of unidentified men allegedly cornered him and physically assaulted him to intimidate him into withdrawing from election duties. Later that evening, several bike-borne miscreants surrounded his residence, hurling abuses and issuing death threats to him and his family. “I am terrified to step out of my house. Is doing my duty a crime?” asked the traumatized official.
Police Action & Political Reactions: Ranaghat Police have initiated a probe into the matter following a formal complaint. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken note of the incident and sought a report from the District Magistrate. The opposition parties have slammed the state government, accusing them of creating an atmosphere of terror to manipulate the election results. Meanwhile, TMC leadership has distanced itself from the incident, calling it a local dispute with no political backing.
