Bengal Polls 2026: Major Shuffling in Bhawanipur! EC Likely to Replace RO After TMC’s ‘Suvendu Link’ Complaint

With the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections drawing closer, the battle for the prestigious Bhawanipur constituency has taken a sharp administrative turn. Following a formal complaint by the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), the Election Commission of India (ECI) is reportedly in the process of replacing the Returning Officer (RO) of Bhawanipur. The TMC had alleged that the officer in question has close ties with the Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari.

The TMC leadership argued that a free and fair election in Bhawanipur would be compromised if the officer remained in charge. Acting swiftly to maintain neutrality, the ECI has asked the state administration (Nabanna) to provide a panel of three potential candidates to take over the role. This move comes as part of the Commission’s rigorous efforts to ensure a level playing field across all sensitive constituencies in the state.

While the BJP has dismissed these allegations as a “desperate tactic” by the TMC to intimidate bureaucracy, the ECI’s decision indicates its zero-tolerance policy toward any perceived bias. Bhawanipur, being a high-stakes seat, remains under the national spotlight. The final selection of the new Returning Officer will be crucial in determining the administrative tone for the upcoming electoral battle in Kolkata.
