Assam Polls 2026: TMC Releases 2nd List of 7 Candidates; Sherman Ali & Aziz Ahmed to Contest

Stepping up its campaign for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) announced its second list of 7 candidates on Sunday. This follows the first list of 17 candidates released a day earlier. A significant development in this announcement was the withdrawal of nomination by Dulu Ahmed, the party’s State Vice-President, who was previously named as the candidate for the Chamaria constituency.
The 7 candidates featured in the second list are:
- Mandia: Sherman Ali Ahmed
- Hajo-Sualkuchi (SC): Rozi Ahmed (Phunu Das)
- Guwahati Central: Abhijit Majumdar
- Chabua-Lahowal: Inus Kumar Kandapan
- Mariani: Paresh Bora
- Karimganj North: Parimal Ranjan Roy
- Karimganj South: Aziz Ahmed Khan (Ranu Khan)
Senior TMC leader Sushmita Dev has reiterated that the party will contest independently in Assam, with a target of fielding candidates in 51 out of 126 seats. Including the first list and the current additions (minus the Chamaria withdrawal), the TMC has officially named 23 candidates so far. The party is strategically targeting the Barak Valley and lower Assam regions, aiming to consolidate the Bengali-speaking and minority votes. With polling set for April 9, the TMC is positioning itself as a strong alternative to the BJP and the Congress-led alliances in the state.
