Air Travel Gets Costlier! IndiGo Hikes Fares Amid 130% Surge in Jet Fuel Prices

In a major blow to air travelers, IndiGo has announced a significant hike in fares for both domestic and international routes, effective today. The decision follows a staggering 130% rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices, triggered by the ongoing conflict in West Asia and global market instability. Since fuel accounts for nearly 40% of the airline’s total operational costs, the company stated it had no choice but to pass the burden onto passengers.

For domestic flights, the new fuel surcharge is based on distance: passengers will pay an extra ₹275 for up to 500 km and up to ₹950 for distances exceeding 2,000 km. International travel has seen an even steeper incline; fares for the UK and Europe have jumped by ₹10,000 per sector. Travelers flying to Southeast Asia, China, and Africa will now have to shell out an additional ₹3,500 to ₹5,000.

This marks the second major adjustment this year after a surcharge hike in March. IndiGo expressed gratitude towards the government’s timely intervention in the domestic fuel sector, noting that without it, air travel would have become virtually impossible for the common man. However, with ATF prices doubling in just 30 days, the current hike is essential for sustainable operations.
