China’s Sinopec is currently focused on establishing a refinery in Hambantota and capturing the retail market to gain deep economic leverage. In response, India’s masterstroke involves securing the entire supply chain. By laying a subsea pipeline, India aims to bypass the high costs and risks associated with shipping, offering Sri Lanka a more reliable and affordable 24/7 energy supply.

The involvement of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) adds a powerful dimension to this plan, bringing in global expertise and massive investment to transform the historic Trincomalee oil tank farm into a global energy hub. This collaboration positions India and the UAE as indispensable economic partners for Sri Lanka, providing a formidable alternative to Chinese dominance while the Sri Lankan government strategically balances investments from both giants to rebuild its economy.
