Scorching Heat Grips Bengal! Will School Summer Vacations Be Preponed After Election Results?

Mid-April has brought an intense heatwave across West Bengal, leaving students and parents worried. While the official academic calendar schedules summer vacations for mid-May, the severe weather conditions have sparked discussions about an early break. Sources suggest that the state education department might announce the primary summer holidays immediately after the upcoming election results are declared.
A Month of Long Weekends: April is already proving to be a month of frequent breaks. Today, April 14, schools are closed nationwide for Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti. This is followed by Pohela Boishakh (Bengali New Year) on April 15. Many institutions combined these with Monday, giving students a four-day extended break. Earlier this month, Good Friday also provided a three-day long weekend.
Expected Dates for Summer Break: According to the WBBSE model holiday list for 2026, the official summer vacation is slated to begin from May 4 for a duration of 15 days. However, given the trend of the last few years, an early closure in the last week of April remains a strong possibility if the mercury continues to soar. For now, schools remain open, awaiting a formal circular from the state government.
