Earth Shakes While the Valley Sleeps! Moderate Quake Hits J&K’s Doda District

A moderate earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale jolted parts of Jammu and Kashmir in the early hours of Sunday, causing widespread panic among residents. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the tremors were felt at around dawn, with the epicenter located in the Doda district of the Union Territory. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 10 kilometers.
As the tremors struck, most residents were fast asleep. The sudden shaking of beds and rattling of windows forced hundreds of people to flee their homes and take refuge in open spaces despite the biting cold. Strong vibrations were reported not only in Doda but also in several neighboring districts and parts of the Kashmir Valley. While the intensity was significant enough to cause fear, there have been no immediate reports of any casualties or major damage to property so far. Disaster management teams are currently assessing the situation in hilly terrains to check for potential landslides. Jammu and Kashmir remains a seismically active zone, and authorities have urged citizens to stay alert for any possible aftershocks.
