Rains in the North, Sweltering Heat in the South! Will West Bengal Face an Uncomfortably Hot Year-End?

As the current year draws to a close, West Bengal is witnessing contrasting weather patterns. While the northern districts are bracing for a bout of unseasonal rain, South Bengal is likely to grapple with sweltering humidity and rising temperatures. The Alipore Meteorological Department has dampened hopes for a cool year-end celebration in the southern districts, warning of uncomfortable weather conditions.

According to the latest forecast, districts like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Jalpaiguri in North Bengal might witness light to moderate rainfall. However, in South Bengal, the influx of moisture from the Bay of Bengal is expected to shoot up humidity levels. This will result in sticky, uncomfortable heat across Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and neighboring districts. There is no immediate sign of rain in the south, which could have provided some respite from the parched conditions.

Will the New Year be unusually warm? Meteorologists suggest that the absence of a cold wave and the shift in wind patterns might make the beginning of the New Year warmer than usual. The lack of winter chill during the festive season is a cause for concern for those planning outdoor events. With the mercury on the rise, South Bengal residents will have to endure a “vapsa gorom” (stifling heat) while ringing in the New Year.
