Extradite Sheikh Hasina! Bangladesh Formalizes Request During Foreign Minister’s High-Level Visit to Delhi

In a significant diplomatic move, the newly elected Bangladesh government has formally requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. During a high-level meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman raised the issue with his Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar. The request also includes the extradition of former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both of whom have been sentenced to death by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal.
This marks the first ministerial-level contact since Tarique Rahman’s government took office in February 2026. Minister Khalilur emphasized the “Bangladesh First” policy, rooted in mutual trust and respect. While EAM Jaishankar reiterated India’s desire to engage constructively with the new administration, New Delhi has maintained a cautious silence on the specific request regarding Hasina’s handover.
Beyond the extradition row, the two nations discussed strengthening ties through increased supplies of diesel and fertilizers from India. Significant progress was made on visa facilitation for medical and business purposes. Additionally, both sides agreed on the transfer of suspects in the Shaheed Osman Hadi murder case. As the BNP-led government seeks to reset ties, the fate of Sheikh Hasina remains the most delicate point of contention in Indo-Bangla diplomacy.
