Mamata Files Nomination from Bhowanipore! Stokes ‘Local vs Outsider’ Row with a Sly Jab at Suvendu

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee officially filed her nomination for the Bhowanipore Assembly seat today, transforming the event into a showcase of pluralism and political defiance. Stepping out of the Alipore Survey Building, Banerjee expressed her deep gratitude to the people of Bhowanipore, stating, “I am here 365 days a year. My faith and work are rooted here. I belong here and will stay here.” Analysts view this as a sharp, indirect swipe at her rival Suvendu Adhikari, labeling him an “outsider” to the constituency.
In a strategically significant move, Banerjee greeted the crowd in Gujarati alongside Bengali. Following the recent Mahua Moitra controversy, her use of Gujarati is seen as a tactical reach-out to the diverse electorate of Bhowanipore.
However, the core of her address remained the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. Banerjee lashed out at the Election Commission, alleging that nearly 91 lakh names had been unjustly purged from the voters’ list. “Of 1.2 crore cases, only 32 lakh were restored. Why were 27 lakh genuine voters frozen?” she questioned. Hinting at another legal battle, she vowed to move the Supreme Court once more, comparing the deletion process to “picking lice from hair.” With districts like Murshidabad and North 24 Parganas being the hardest hit, Banerjee’s nomination has set the stage for a high-stakes legal and political showdown.
