Ban on Anti-Govt Content? Centre Breaks Silence on Controversial New IT Rules

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has come forward to address the growing concerns among content creators regarding the proposed amendments to the Information Technology (IT) Rules, 2021. Rumors had been swirling that the new regulations would grant the government power to summarily remove any anti-establishment content.
Dismissing these claims, MEITY Secretary S. Krishnan stated that the idea of a total crackdown on dissent is a “myth.” He emphasized that the government is bound by constitutional limits and is only seeking to bring structural reforms to the existing framework. The new draft focuses on four key areas: data preservation, compliance with current laws, clearer definitions of content, and structural updates to Section 79(2)(c).
The core of the controversy lies in the proposal for partial oversight of online news and current affairs. While critics argue this threatens digital freedom, the ministry maintains that the objective is to ensure accountability. The government has proactively invited public feedback on this draft until April 14. This participatory approach aims to refine the rules based on citizen recommendations before any final implementation, ensuring that the digital landscape remains secure yet free.
