No More Post-Poll Unrest? Central Forces to Stay in Bengal for an ‘Indefinite Period’!

In a major move to curb the history of post-poll violence in West Bengal, the Election Commission (EC) has taken an unprecedented decision regarding the stay of central forces. Departing from the usual practice of withdrawing troops immediately after polling, the EC has announced that Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) will remain stationed in the state for an “indefinite period” until normalcy is fully restored.
This decision comes in light of the massive unrest witnessed in previous elections after the results were declared. Approximately 500 companies, comprising 50,000 personnel, will stay back to maintain law and order across sensitive districts. These forces will be tasked with area domination and preventing any retaliatory political attacks. The commission has issued strict instructions to ensure that no citizen or political worker is targeted once the electoral process ends. By maintaining this extended security blanket, the EC aims to transform the political culture of the state and ensure a fear-free environment for all.
