Escape to Nepal Foiled! Kaliachak Riot Mastermind Mofakkarul Islam Arrested at Bagdogra Airport

The prime accused in the Kaliachak violence, Mofakkarul Islam, was apprehended by the CID at Bagdogra Airport while attempting to flee to Nepal. A lawyer by profession and a resident of Itahar, North Dinajpur, Mofakkarul is accused of inciting communal tensions using the “voter list deletion” issue as a tool to radicalize local youths.
His inflammatory speeches reportedly led to the physical assault attempt on seven judges in Malda and widespread unrest. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar alleged that Mofakkarul planned to use Nepal as a gateway to escape to Bangladesh, citing Nepal’s history as a hub for ISI activities. His involvement in last year’s Murshidabad riots has also surfaced during the investigation.
Recognizing the gravity of the situation and the potential for a larger terror conspiracy, the Election Commission transferred the case from the CBI to the NIA (National Investigation Agency) late last night. While the CID currently holds custody, an NIA team has already landed in Kolkata and is heading to Mothabari to uncover the deeper structural plan behind the violence.
