Disney has officially announced that the beloved sequel series ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’ will draw to a close this summer with a gripping four-part special event. In a major milestone for the franchise, Selena Gomez is set to make her directorial debut with the final episodes. Apart from being an executive producer, she will also reprise her iconic role as Alex Russo in several key segments.

The finale follows the dramatic cliffhanger of Season 2, where Billy discovered that Alex Russo is her biological mother. To save her family from the dark wizard Lord Morsus, Alex sacrificed herself by jumping into a dangerous portal. The upcoming specials will follow Billy’s quest to reunite with her estranged father and bring Alex back while facing an ultimate showdown with dark magic.

Original creator Todd Greenwald’s world will see David Henrie (Justin Russo) and Selena Gomez leading the production team one last time. According to Deadline, filming begins next week, promising fans a magical and emotional farewell to the Russo family legacy on Disney+ and Disney Channel.
