‘Outsider’ Candidate or Power Struggle? Why Did Debashis Sarkar Resign Just Before Elections?

In a massive blow to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Hooghly’s Balagarh block, regional president Debashis Sarkar has resigned from his post just as assembly elections approach. Debashis, a key member of the Zirat Gram Panchayat, sent his resignation to the district president, and the letter has since gone viral on social media, sparking intense speculation about a growing divide within the party.

While Debashis cited “personal reasons and lack of time” in his letter, local insiders point toward long-standing dissatisfaction. He was reportedly overlooked for the Panchayat Pradhan post earlier, and the party’s decision to field ‘outsider’ candidate Ranjan Dhara for the upcoming polls has further fueled resentment. Sanjay Roy, a member of the block’s core committee, expressed disappointment over the public resignation, stating that internal issues should have been discussed within the party. With TMC struggling to regain ground in Balagarh after a setback in the last Lok Sabha polls, this high-profile exit adds to the ruling party’s challenges.
