Live-in Couples to be Counted as ‘Married’! Big Shift in Census 2027 Rules by Center

In a landmark move reflecting the evolving social fabric of India, the Central Government has announced that live-in couples will be categorized as “married” in the upcoming 2027 National Census. This directive applies to couples who consider their relationship to be stable and permanent, even if they have not undergone traditional religious or civil marriage ceremonies.
According to sources within the Ministry of Home Affairs, the classification will rely on the self-declaration of the respondents. If a couple living together identifies as a unit and views their commitment as long-term, census enumerators will record them under the married category. This shift aims to capture a more accurate picture of modern Indian households, acknowledging that an increasing number of people are choosing cohabitation over formal marriage.
The decision is seen as a significant step toward the formal recognition of non-traditional unions in official statistics. While the Indian judiciary has previously granted several rights to live-in partners, including protection under domestic violence laws, this is the first time the executive branch is integrating them into the national demographic database as a married entity.
Social analysts suggest that this could pave the way for future policy changes regarding joint bank accounts, insurance nominations, and housing benefits for live-in couples. However, the move has already sparked intense debate across the country, with some hailing it as a progressive step toward individual liberty, while others express concerns over the potential impact on the sanctity of the traditional institution of marriage.
