Nitish Kumar Moves to Delhi; BJP Eyes the CM Post in Bihar After Decades of Coalition

In a major political development, Bihar’s longest-serving Chief Minister and JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar has officially resigned from his membership in the State Legislative Council (MLC). This follows his recent election to the Rajya Sabha earlier this month. Nitish’s transition to the Parliament marks a significant shift in Bihar’s political landscape, potentially paving the way for a BJP-led government in the state.

With 89 seats, the BJP is currently the largest party in the 243-member assembly, while Nitish’s JD(U) holds 85. Analysts suggest that the BJP might finally claim the Chief Minister’s post, a move that could reshape the NDA alliance. In return, JD(U) is expected to secure two Deputy CM posts, with intense rumors suggesting that Nitish’s son, Nishant Kumar, might make his political debut in one of these roles.

Nitish Kumar, whose career began in 1985, has been a master of coalition politics, serving as CM for a record ten times. Despite his frequent shifts between alliances, he remained the face of Bihar for decades. As he heads to Delhi to fulfill his long-standing wish of being a member of Parliament again, the focus shifts to Patna, where a new leadership under the BJP is likely to emerge. Nitish has promised his “guidance and cooperation” for a “developed Bihar” as he steps into this new role.
