Heatwave Alert! Mercury to Hit 40°C in Bankura & Purulia; How Hot Will Kolkata Get?

Bengal is bracing for a grueling summer as the regional meteorological center in Alipore has issued a fresh warning regarding a sharp spike in temperatures. Within the next few days, several districts in South Bengal are expected to witness a rise of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. The western belt, particularly Bankura and Purulia, is on the verge of hitting the 40°C mark, signaling an early onset of heatwave-like conditions in March itself.

Scorchers in Western Districts: Districts like Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, and West Midnapore are expected to bear the brunt of dry north-westerly winds. Experts suggest that the lack of moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal is facilitating this rapid heating. There is a high probability of ‘Loo’ (hot dry winds) blowing in these regions during the afternoon hours. With 2026 being influenced by El Niño patterns, meteorologists fear this could be one of the hottest summers on record.

Humidity Nightmare for Kolkata: While the capital city might stay slightly below 40°C, the high humidity levels will make life miserable for Kolkatans. The maximum temperature is projected to hover around 37°C to 38°C, but the ‘RealFeel’ or discomfort index will be much higher due to the presence of moisture. The sweaty and sultry weather is expected to persist as there is no forecast of rain or thunderstorms (Kalbaisakhi) for at least the next week. Even if partial clouds appear in the evening, they are likely to trap the heat rather than provide cooling.

Health Advisory: Health experts recommend avoiding direct sun exposure between 11 AM and 4 PM. Citizens are advised to carry umbrellas, wear light cotton clothes, and increase their intake of fluids like water and ORS to prevent heatstroke. With the heat intensifying earlier than usual, the public is urged to take necessary precautions against dehydration and heat exhaustion.
