In a significant move to fortify India’s national security, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has accorded approval for the procurement of additional S-400 Triumf missile defence systems and a fleet of advanced lethal drones. The decision, taken during a high-level meeting on Friday, is aimed at enhancing the combat readiness of the Indian Armed Forces amidst the evolving security challenges along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the western borders.

The S-400 Triumf is widely regarded as one of the world’s most advanced long-range surface-to-air missile systems, capable of neutralizing incoming threats such as enemy aircraft, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles from a distance of up to 400 kilometers. The inclusion of more units will provide a multi-layered air defense shield over strategic locations and critical infrastructure. Furthermore, the approval for “killer drones” or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) marks a pivotal shift in India’s offensive capabilities. These drones are designed for high-endurance surveillance and precision strikes, making them indispensable in modern hybrid warfare.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that these acquisitions are aligned with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, encouraging domestic manufacturing in the defense sector. The recent global conflicts have highlighted the decisive role of drone swarms and air defense, prompting India to fast-track its modernization plans. With the induction of these sophisticated weapon systems, the Indian Air Force and Army will achieve superior situational awareness and the ability to strike back with pinpoint accuracy. This strategic upgrade serves as a stern warning to adversaries and cements India’s position as a dominant military power in the Indo-Pacific region.
