Middle East Conflict Alert: Petroleum Secretary Writes Urgent Letter to State Chief Secretaries

As the geopolitical situation in West Asia remains volatile following the Iran-Israel escalation, the Government of India has initiated a high-level coordination exercise to safeguard the nation’s energy interests. The Secretary of the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has formally written to the Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories, urging them to remain vigilant regarding the supply and distribution of petroleum products.
The primary objective of this communication is to ensure that the global supply chain disruptions do not lead to domestic chaos. The Ministry has directed state administrations to monitor fuel stocks at retail outlets and prevent any attempts of black-marketing or artificial hoarding. Historically, during international conflicts, “panic buying” by consumers often leads to localized shortages; the Center has asked states to deploy local authorities to manage such situations and ensure a smooth flow of petrol and diesel.
In the letter, the Petroleum Secretary emphasized that while the central government is monitoring the global crude market and the safety of maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz, the states must play a proactive role at the ground level. State governments have been advised to maintain a close liaison with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to track daily inventory levels. The directive explicitly mentions that any unauthorized restriction of fuel supply by dealers should be met with strict legal action under the Essential Commodities Act. This move underscores the Center’s commitment to maintaining economic stability despite the brewing energy crisis in the Middle East.
