Is Lockdown Returning? Mamata Banerjee Slams BJP Over Fuel Crisis and Looming Restrictions

As speculation grows regarding the re-imposition of certain restrictions or a “partial lockdown” to manage the escalating fuel crisis, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government. Ahead of the high-profile meeting between the Prime Minister and state Chief Ministers, Banerjee alleged that the Centre is using the West Asian war as a shield to cover its economic mismanagement and to burden the common citizens.

Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister expressed grave concern over the talk of potential curbs on movement or industrial activity to conserve fuel. “First, they let the fuel and LPG prices skyrocket, and now there are whispers of bringing back lockdown-like measures. Why should the people of India suffer for the Centre’s inability to secure energy reserves?” she questioned. Mamata further added that any attempt to stifle the economy under the guise of an emergency would be met with strong political resistance in Bengal.

Strategic experts suggest that Mamata’s aggressive stance is aimed at cornering the BJP on the issue of inflation and supply chain failure before the 2026 Assembly elections. By linking the fuel crisis to the dreaded word “Lockdown,” she is tapping into the public’s anxiety to build a narrative against the central administration. As the Prime Minister prepares to discuss “strategic austerity” with state heads tomorrow, Mamata Banerjee has already set the tone for a confrontational dialogue, making it clear that Bengal will not accept any policy that hurts the pocket of the common man.
