Kolkata Weather Alert: Weekend Rain Likely! 2 Key Reasons Behind the Sudden Storm Threat.

Kolkata is bracing for a significant weather shift this weekend as the Alipore Meteorological Department predicts widespread thunderstorms and rain across South Bengal. After a spell of scorching heat and uncomfortable humidity, nature might provide a brief respite. Experts have identified two major meteorological factors behind this expected atmospheric instability that could trigger the season’s typical Nor’westers (Kalbaisakhi).

The first reason is the significant incursion of moisture from the Bay of Bengal into the mainland, which is creating a high-humidity environment conducive to storm formation. Secondly, a persistent cyclonic circulation over Northeast Bangladesh and its neighborhood is acting as a catalyst, pulling in unstable winds. The combination of these factors is likely to result in peak storm activity on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with wind speeds potentially reaching 40-50 kmph.

While South Bengal districts like North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah, and Hooghly prepare for squally winds, North Bengal remains under a hailstorm watch. Districts such as Darjeeling and Kalimpong are expected to receive moderate rainfall. Although the maximum temperature is expected to drop by 2-3°C following the showers, the Met office warns that the pre-storm phase will remain “warm and humid.” Residents are advised to stay updated with real-time lightning alerts and avoid open spaces during the peak storm hours.
