High-Stakes Battle in Bhabanipur! TMC Demands Removal of ‘Suvendu-Linked’ Officer; Here’s the EC’s Response

The political temperature in West Bengal has soared as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has officially moved the Election Commission (EC) seeking the immediate removal of the Returning Officer (RO) for the Bhabanipur constituency. The party has alleged that the designated officer shares a close personal and professional rapport with the Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, which could jeopardize the fairness of the upcoming polls.

TMC’s Allegations: The TMC delegation claimed that the officer’s past assignments suggest a clear bias towards the BJP leader. In their formal complaint, the party stated, “The appointment of an individual with known proximity to a key opposition figure in a sensitive constituency like Bhabanipur is a direct threat to the democratic process. We demand a neutral official to oversee the proceedings to ensure transparency.”

The Commission’s Verdict: Responding to the uproar, the Election Commission has defended its appointment. The EC stated that all Returning Officers are selected based on strict administrative criteria and seniority. “An officer cannot be transferred solely based on political allegations unless there is concrete evidence of a breach of conduct or administrative failure,” a senior official from the poll body remarked. The EC further assured that multiple levels of independent observers would be deployed in Bhabanipur to prevent any malpractice, effectively turning down the TMC’s request for an immediate reshuffle at this stage.
