The ‘Owaisi-Humayun’ Factor: Target 182 Seats in Bengal 2026; TMC’s Minority Stronghold Under Threat?

The political climate in West Bengal is heating up as a formidable new alliance emerges ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Dissident TMC leader Humayun Kabir and Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM have set their sights on 182 assembly constituencies across the state. The primary objective of this tie-up is to consolidate the minority vote bank, which has traditionally been a cornerstone of the Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) success.

During a massive rally in Baharampur, Humayun Kabir asserted that the minority community in Bengal is no longer satisfied with being a mere vote bank for the ruling party. By targeting 182 seats, the alliance aims to secure significant representation in the state assembly. Kabir indicated that the geographical distribution of the minority population allows them to influence nearly two-thirds of the total seats in Bengal. The slogan is clear: unify the minority voice to demand direct political power.

This move has sent ripples through the ruling party’s leadership. For years, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has relied on the overwhelming support of the Muslim community to ward off the BJP. However, the Humayun-Owaisi alliance threatens to split this mandate. If the coalition manages to draw even a fraction of the votes in districts like Murshidabad, Malda, and North Dinajpur, it could drastically alter the 2026 results. The “Mission 182” strategy is not just about winning seats; it is a direct challenge to the binary politics of Bengal, positioning the alliance as a potential kingmaker in the near future.
