Just weeks before the 2026 Kerala Assembly Elections, the ruling CPM is facing a catastrophic internal crisis in its bastion, Taliparamba. Senior district leader T.K. Govindan has rebelled against the party’s decision to field P.K. Shyamala, the wife of CPM State Secretary M.V. Govindan. The revolt is deeply tied to the infamous 2019 suicide of NRI businessman Sajan Parayil, who ended his life after being denied permits for his project by the municipality then headed by Shyamala. Govindan’s decision to contest as an independent has exposed deep fissures regarding nepotism and lack of accountability within the party cadres.
