Crisis in Hormuz! Which New Country is Rescuing India’s LPG Supply Amid Mid-East War?

As the conflict in the Middle East intensifies, the strategic Strait of Hormuz—the lifeline for nearly 60% of India’s LPG imports—has effectively become a high-risk zone. However, India has successfully averted a domestic cooking gas crisis through a massive diversification strategy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed Parliament that India has expanded its energy sourcing from 27 nations a decade ago to 41 nations today, ensuring that no single regional conflict can paralyze the country’s kitchens.

In a significant shift, Argentina has emerged as a crucial alternative supplier. Reports indicate that LPG shipments from Argentina to India in the first three months of 2026 have more than doubled compared to 2025. Along with South America, the United States has also become a cornerstone of India’s energy security. Indian oil marketing companies have secured long-term contracts for 2.2 million metric tonnes of US-origin LPG for the year 2026, bypassing the volatile Middle Eastern routes.

PM Modi also highlighted India’s internal preparedness, revealing a strategic petroleum reserve of 5.33 million metric tonnes. By tapping into new markets like Argentina, Norway, and Russia, the government is ensuring a steady flow of fuel. Despite the “worrisome” situation in West Asia, India’s proactive diplomacy and diversified import basket are successfully shielding 33 crore households from potential energy shortages.
