Big Shift in LPG Refills? Oil Companies May Cut Cylinder Weight to 10kg Amid Supply Crisis

India is bracing for a potential LPG shortage as geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz disrupt global supply chains. According to a report by The Economic Times, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are considering a temporary ‘rationing’ plan. Instead of the standard 14.2kg refill, domestic cylinders might only be supplied with 10kg of LPG to ensure equitable distribution among all households.
The Impact of Global Conflict: With India importing 60% of its LPG requirements, the ongoing Iran-Israel-US conflict has led to several cargo ships being stranded in the Persian Gulf. India consumes approximately 93,500 tonnes of LPG daily. To manage the limited stock, this alternative strategy is being discussed. While a 10kg refill will last about 30 days compared to the usual 40 days, the price of the cylinder will be reduced proportionally, providing some relief to consumers’ pockets.
